Maiden Tower of Buca is a conical stone building located in the Barış Neighborhood, in the İşevleri district of Buca, and called the “Maiden’s Tower” by the residents of the district. The Maiden’s Tower, whose upper part can be reached by a staircase that goes around the outer perimeter, belongs to Hacı Antoniyadis, a Levantine from Buca.
The Maidens Tower of Buca, which has hosted dozens of different stories until today, is remembered by the public with different versions of the same story.
With its interesting architectural style, the Maiden Tower of Buca, one of the three towers built in the shape of a funnel in Buca, was surrounded by vineyards, gardens and olive groves at the time it was built. Among the two towers that have survived from these three iconic towers, named Tıngıroğlu Tower (Tıngırtepe) and Priest’s Tower, located on three different hills surrounding Buca, are Hacı Antoniyadis’s Maiden’s Tower and the Priest’s Tower located in Yörük Ali Efe Park.
Maiden Tower of Buca has become famous as the meeting place of young people and young lovers in time and has an important place in Buca’s visual memory.
The Story of Maiden Tower of Buca
Maiden Tower of Buca has two most known stories among the people today.
The first story is as follows: Once upon a time, the daughter of a Greek mister fell ill with a fatal disease. The Greek master applied to many doctors for the recovery of his daughter. The physicians of the period told the Greek gentleman that for his daughter to recover, he had to settle in a clean place. Buca is famous for its clean air that healed the sick in the past. Rum mister comes to Buca.
The height that coincided with the northeast of Buca at that time and overlooked the Paradiso Plain from above, had a stone tower built in a region. However, the clean air of Buca does not help and the man’s daughter dies after a while.
The second story is as follows: The daughter of a Greek gentleman named Foster and the son of a priest love each other. However, there is a animosity between the fathers of the two young people. Because of this situation, two young people have a tower built on their own land in order to communicate with each other. One of them is called the ‘girl’s tower’ and the other is called the ‘boy’s tower’.
Since there was no construction at that time, it is possible that the towers could see each other. In this way, young people communicate with each other through towers. (It seems that the other tower, which is meant as the Boy’s Tower, is the Priest’s Tower in Koşutepe).
